FBD Type Mechanical Seal Installation and Maintenance Guide

Mechanical seals act as “gatekeepers” in mechanical equipment, preventing liquid or gas leakage. FBD type mechanical seals are a particularly durable type, commonly used in pumps, compressors, and other machinery requiring frequent operation. Today, we’ll discuss how to properly install and maintain FBD type mechanical seals to ensure their long-term reliable operation. Before installation, thoroughly clean the machine shaft and sealing cavity, removing dust, metal shavings, and other debris, as these can easily wear down the sealing surfaces. Just as you clean a door frame before installing a door, cleanliness ensures a tight seal. Then, inspect all sealing components, such as the rotating ring, retaining ring, and spring, for deformation or damage. If cracks or wear are found, replace them; never use substitutes.

FBD Type Mechanical Seal Installation and Maintenance Guide

During installation, apply a small amount of lubricant to the contact surfaces of the rotating and retaining rings, like oiling a bicycle chain, to reduce friction and make rotation smoother. Then, install the spring in the designated position and adjust the pressure—too loose will cause leakage, too tight will cause wear. This step is like adjusting a rubber band; you need to find the right tension. Next, install the entire seal onto the machine shaft, ensuring the contact surfaces of the rotating and stationary rings are aligned. After installation, gently rotate the shaft by hand to check for any jamming or unusual noise. If any is found, disassemble and inspect for incorrect installation. After installation, you need to test run the machine. After starting the machine, check for leaks at the seal. Even a small leak can be serious and may indicate improper installation or a defective component. Stop the machine immediately and inspect it; do not wait until the leak becomes severe. Just like a leaking pipe needs to be tightened promptly, otherwise the leak will worsen.

After the machine has been running for a period of time, the sealing surface will gradually wear down and requires regular inspection. For example, check the seal for leaks monthly and pay attention to any unusual noises. If a leak is found, it may be due to a loose spring, an aging seal ring, or worn contact surfaces, requiring timely adjustment or replacement of the component. Just like a car needs regular maintenance, mechanical seals also need “checks.” During maintenance, pay attention to cleaning. If the machine frequently handles dirty or unclean water, sediment may accumulate in the sealing cavity. Regular flushing is necessary to prevent particles from getting stuck between the sealing surfaces and causing scratches. This is similar to regularly removing limescale from a household faucet to prevent it from failing to shut off properly.

Furthermore, temperature and pressure must be closely monitored. While FBD seals can withstand high temperatures and pressures, exceeding their limits for extended periods, such as temperatures exceeding 400°C or pressures exceeding 3.0 MPa, will accelerate their aging. Therefore, these parameters must be monitored during machine operation to prevent overload. It is best to keep some spare parts, such as springs and seals, on hand for immediate replacement in case of damage, preventing the machine from operating with a malfunction. This is similar to keeping some common medicines at home to treat minor ailments yourself.

Installing an FBD mechanical seal requires exceptional care; every step, from cleaning to adjustment, must be meticulous. Regular maintenance, including inspection, cleaning, and replacement of parts, is crucial for ensuring its long-term protection of the machine. Although it is a small component, it plays a vital role—reducing machine leaks and downtime, thereby saving costs and ensuring safety. This is the value of paying close attention to it in our daily lives.
