What are the steps for installing a float shoe?

Float shoes play a crucial role in cementing operations, and their proper installation directly affects cementing quality and downhole safety. Correct installation steps not only ensure the float shoe functions effectively but also reduce construction risks and malfunctions. Float shoe installation requires attention to several aspects, including the operational sequence, precise positioning, and material protection.

What are the steps for installing a float shoe?

Float Shoe Inspection and Preparation

Before installation, a comprehensive inspection of the float shoe is necessary. Confirm that the float shoe model matches the well diameter, and check that the sealing rings and rubber components are intact, ensuring there are no cracks or damage. The float shoe surface should be clean, free of mud, oil, or debris to avoid affecting the sealing effect. Prepare the necessary tools for installation, such as casing lifting equipment, a spirit level, and supports, ensuring a safe and reliable installation environment.

Float Shoe Positioning and Casing Connection

Float shoe positioning is a critical step in the entire installation process, as it determines whether a successful seal and support can be achieved after the float shoe is lowered into the well. The following steps must be followed during operation:

  • Use a casing lifting device to slowly raise the float shoe to the bottom of the casing, ensuring smooth operation.
  • The center of the float shoe must be completely aligned with the casing opening to avoid tilting.
  • Check that the lower part of the float shoe is in uniform contact with the inner wall of the casing to ensure balanced force.
  • Initially fix the position of the float shoe to prevent movement during construction.
  • Use a support or locator if necessary to maintain stability.

Through the above steps, the float shoe can be ensured to sink smoothly and perform its sealing function during cementing. After positioning, the float shoe position should be reconfirmed to be stable, laying the foundation for subsequent fixing and well entry operations.

Fixing and Locking

After the float shoe is positioned, it needs to be fixed and locked. Use bolts or locking devices to firmly fix the float shoe to the end of the casing to prevent displacement during lifting, transportation, or well entry. The locking force should be uniform to avoid excessive local force causing damage. After fixing, check again whether the float shoe is stable to ensure it will not loosen.

Well Run-in Operation

Slowly run the float shoe and casing together into the wellbore, carefully controlling the speed to avoid collisions with the wellbore wall or wellhead equipment. Continuously monitor the float shoe’s position during the process to ensure smooth descent. If resistance or jamming occurs, stop operation immediately and investigate the cause. Keeping the casing vertical during run-in reduces friction between the float shoe and the wellbore wall, lowering the risk of damage.

Post-Installation Inspection and Confirmation

After the float shoe is run into the well, a final inspection is required. Confirm that the float shoe is at the designed depth, the sealing ring is under normal stress, and the lower part of the casing is stable. Record the installation parameters and depth for cementing and subsequent construction reference. Only after the inspection is completed can the next cementing or other operations be carried out, ensuring construction safety and the proper functioning of the float shoe.
